DURBAN ICC TO HOST AORTIC CONFERENCE ON CANCER IN AFRICA

Durban has secured the right to host the African Organisation for Research and Training in Cancer (AORTIC) Biennial International Cancer Conference in 2013.
 
The five day conference which will be held at the Durban International Convention Centre in  late 2013 is set to attract  1 000 delegates from countries all over Africa as well as Europe and North America and is expected to generate in the order of R12.5-million for the local economy.  AORTIC is held every second year in different countries throughout Africa in order to best serve the interests of the African cancer care community. 
 
“Winning this conference is testament to the Durban ICC’s reputation as Africa’s leading conference and meetings venue. We are particularly excited to be hosting an increasing number of medical and scientific conferences. More and more Associations are seeing the advantage of hosting these conferences in Durban as the city is able to present cutting-edge content matter in both first and third world socio-economic contexts. In addition the Durban ICC is able to provide world class facilities which meet any conference organiser’s requirements ensuring a great conferencing experience.” said Julie-May Ellingson, Chief Executive Officer of the Durban ICC.
 
“Hosting a conference of this nature in Durban will further assist medical researchers in their research relating to cancers prevalent in Africa. The conference will provide support for the management of training programmes in oncology for health care workers, deal with the challenges of creating cancer control and prevention programmes and raise public awareness of cancer in Africa.” said Prof Vikash Sewram, Oncology Research Unit, UKZN and Director: Cancer Research Initiative of South Africa (CARISA)
 
Chief Executive Officer of the Durban Convention Bureau, James Seymour said “We are extremely pleased to have collaborated with the Durban ICC in securing this event for Durban”. 
 
The 2011 AORTIC conference was held in Cairo, Egypt, from 30 November to 2 December 2011.
